This past weekend Tyler Bowers found out that revenge was his own worst enemy. Things may have been different in the Arenacross world, and exacting some payback may not have gotten you tossed from a race before it began. Bowers found out this is not the case in the world of Supercross.
Tyler sent Justin Barcia into the tough blocks and his bike over the tough blocks and off the track. When Ricky Carmichael made the call in the booth, he immediately stated it was retaliation for an incident at Monster Energy Cup last fall. In that incident Barcia slammed into Bowers in the corner before the finish line jump, slowing Bowers dramatically. It was later determined that Bowers had suffered a fracture of the lower leg due to the contact by Barcia. Was it really because of something that long ago? It is said that racers have long memories and do not forget.
Bowers released a statement Sunday February 17, 2019 through social media concerning the events that took place during the heat race and during the disqualification by officials. In the statement Bowers doesn’t disagree 100% with the call, but his biggest concern is the consistency or lack thereof by the governing body. A similar event happened on the track moments after the call to disqualify Bowers was established and nothing was done to that rider.
It usually isn’t a rider’s prerogative to go after someone just because, usually something happens on the track before to push a guy to his breaking point. Granted cooler heads should prevail but hot heads are hot heads and these are guys in the heat of a battle for a position usually, so they might not be thinking about the big picture in an instant as such. It’s like road rage in an actual race, for points, in a championship. When you throw into the mix a history of bad blood, well then you have the makings of an incident just like we witnessed Saturday night.
It was unfortunate for Tyler the way things went down, literally. They say revenge is a dish best served cold. I do not think that revenge tasted as good as Bowers had hoped it would. Hopefully he takes a breath and thinks twice the next time he thinks he’d like to dish up some revenge so he can keep his head, his bike, and his team in the game.
